Mille Lacs Veterinary Clinic at Milaca is staffed with a team of friendly doctors and support staff to meet the needs of your small pet or large animal.
Dr. Sara Jacobsen
Dr. Jacobsen is a small animal veterinarian for the Milaca Clinic. She grew up in Milaca and obtained a biology degree from the College of St. Benedict prior to attending veterinary school at the University of Minnesota. She has special interests in small animal medicine and public health. She has three terriers at home named Mac, Muzzy, and Charlie.
Dr. Christopher Nord
Dr. Nord joined the MLVC Milaca clinic in 2002 and became a co-owner in 2007. He received his BA in biology from St. Olaf College and is a graduate of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Nord works primarily on large animals but enjoys spending his free time with his wife; two children; their dogs, Eddie and Lena; and cat, Socrates, at home. His special interests lie in bovine and equine herd health, preventative medicine, and any type of surgery.
Dr. Dan Peterson
Dr. Dan Peterson is a large animal veterinarian, he joined MLVC in June 2013. He grew up in Ogilvie, MN and went on to obtain his BS degree in animal science from the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 2009. Dr. Peterson graduated from the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine. His professional interests include large animal medicine from horses & cattle to small ruminants & swine. Dr. Peterson married his high school sweetheart, Rachel, and they now have a beautiful little girl as well as two dogs, Diesel and Gemma, and a cat, Bandit, at home. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, and any other outdoor activity.
Dr. Sarah Hegman
Dr. Hegman joined the Mille Lacs Veterinary Group in 2017. She received her Bachelors in Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin River Falls. She then graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. Her professional interests include small animal internal medicine, ultrasonography, and ophthalmology. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, her dog Zeus, and her two horses.

Erin Showers, CVT
Erin is a small animal veterinary technician at the Milaca Clinic. She graduated from Ridgewater College in 2001 and joined MLVC in June of 2003. She enjoys spending her free time with her horse, Nick; three dogs, Katie, Louis and Jetta; and her three cats, Bing, Wheeler and Simon. She also keeps very busy with her two girls and little boy as well as her husband, Steve.
Shannon Plumski, CVT
Shannon is a small animal veterinary technician for the Milaca Clinic. She joined MLVC in March 2009 after graduating with honors from MSB with an AAS degree in veterinary technology. Shannon especially enjoys working with brachycephalic (“squish faced”) dogs and has a special love for Boston terriers. Shannon has two crazy Boston terriers of her own at home, Beau and Dixie. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Aaron, and three young sons. She also enjoys fishing, camping, shopping, and scrap-booking.
Stephanie Rau, CVT
Stephanie is a small animal veterinary technician at the Milaca and Foley clinics. She has been with MLVC since February 2007. She graduated from Ridgewater College in 2006 with her veterinary technology degree. Stephanie is married to her husband, Jon, and has two girls and one boy at home. In her spare time, she enjoys fishing, gardening and spending time with her family and her animals. Currently, she has four dogs, two cats, a few beef cows, and a pony.
Katie Carlson, CVT
Katie is the large animal veterinary technician with the Milaca and Foley clinics. She received her BS degree in animal science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2006, and has been a die-hard Golden Gopher all her life. She completed an AAS degree in veterinary technology in 2011 from Argosy University and joined MLVC that same year after obtaining her veterinary technician certification. When she is not working with the “big guys,” Katie spends time with her Australian Kelpie, Aberdeen; her cat, Belle; and Shetland pony, Rusty. She also loves spending lots of quality time with her little nephew, family, and friends; as well as reading, music, and being outdoors.
Erin Herbrand, CVT
Erin Herbrand is a small animal veterinary technician at the Foley and Milaca Clinics. Erin graduated from Ridgewater College in 2001 with her veterinary technology degree and joined MLVC in 2005. She enjoys spending quality time with her husband and two boys. Erin and her family also love playing with their black lab and four house cats.
Krista Struffert, CVT
Krista started working with us in February of 2015. She graduated and received her certification from the Minnesota School of Business in 2012. The area she finds most interesting in the veterinary field is preventative care. She and her husband, Andy, have two children. They have been raising Simmental cattle since 2006, and have 5 pets: Border Collies Kid and Tillie; a Blue Heeler mix named Lyle; and two cats, Lady and Bumblebee. In her free time, Krista loves riding and showing Quarter horses.
Sam Voorhees, CVT
Sam Voorhees, CVT, graduated from Minnesota School of Business Waite Park in 2012 with her veterinary technology degree. She started working at MLVC in January, 2015 in Milaca. Sam and her husband Cody have two goats, two Labrador Retrievers, Lola and Chevrolet, and 4 cats: Lex, Nova, Duramax, and Cruze. They welcomed their first child into the world on July, 2016. Sam enjoys taking her dogs to the lake, going fishing, riding horses, and spending time with her daughter, Caroline.
Cindy Werronen, Groomer
Originally from Crystal, MN, Cindy graduated from Twin City School of Pet Grooming in 1992. She and her husband currently live in Milaca with 2 Labradors, 2 Chihuahuas, 1 Miniature Pinscher, 4 barn cats, 1 pot-bellied pig, several horses, and a handful of chickens. She’s dedicated to the health and happiness of all ‘critters.’ Cindy has been involved with MHARS for 20 years and enjoys the outdoors, bass fishing, and making all the “puppies” pretty as the groomer for MLVC.
Customer Service Team
Margie Elbert, Practice Manager
Margie is MLVC’s practice manager and works closely with all of our three clinics. She graduated from the U of MN, Waseca, in 1978 in animal health technology. Margie started with MLVC in 1986 as a dog groomer then became a receptionist and vet tech; in 1999, Margie moved into her current role. Margie and her husband raise Braunvieh Beef Cattle with the help of their Border Collie, Abigail (pictured). Margie enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, and working her team of Haflinger horses, Coffee & Cream.
Betty Roske, Receptionist
Betty joined MLVC over 14 years ago. Before that, she and her husband, Jim, were active dairy farmers. Now retired from farming, Betty still has her dog, Copper, to watch over at home. As hobbies, she enjoys gardening, sewing, and fishing. Betty also likes visiting with clients regarding their concerns and wellness of their animals.
Connie Ruis, Receptionist
Connie joined MLVC in July of 2006. She enjoys interacting with the clients and making them smile. She also works on the family dairy farm with her husband. In her spare time, Connie enjoys spending time with family and friends and loves to ride the 4-wheeler with her seven granddaughters.
Melanie Gothman, Receptionist
Melanie is married and has 3 teenage boys that keep her very busy. Before joining MLVC, she had animal experience in USDA animal welfare compliance. Her family has 4 pets: 1 dog, 2 parakeets, and 1 guinea pig. Melanie’s hobbies include watching her children play school sports, reading, and anything football-related.
